High-end communication and electronic gadgets worth P30 million and believed to be smuggled into the country were seized by agents of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in a raid at a building on Lakandula Street, Tondo, Manila recently.
Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon reported that the BOC acted on intelligence reports that an online shop identified as Kim Store has been selling imported high-end communications gadgets under suspicious importation schemes.
“The BOC, under my watch, will often conduct raids in warehouses, storehouses, and depots, to combat the malpractice and related crimes, and finally jail perpetrators, once and for all,” Faeldon said.
He added that extensive operations conducted by agents of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) led them to Kim Store depot in Tondo, Manila.
CIIS Director Neil Estrella disclosed that the seized items include a series of iphone 7 cellular phones, macbook laptops, galaxy cellular phones, nexus 6Ps, Zenfone 3 Ultra, Sony Xperia (pixel XL 32 GB), Canon Cameras, tablets and music players, audio accessories, gadgets for safety and security, among others.
“There are plenty of cases where high-end communication and electronic gadgets are smuggled into the country through misdeclaration schemes, a top form of smuggling, used by smugglers to defraud and avoid paying duties and taxes to the government,” he said..“We are still validating other intelligence reports and will fully identify the real owners of Kim Store in the next few days,” .
Intelligence Officer Joel Pinawin, leader of the raiding team, reported that the staff of Kim Store’s depot failed to present import documents for their imported goods..
